CONCRETE ACTIONS BY ONG TANY IFANDOVANA

Off the coast of Plum Island, experts from the NGO Tany Ifandovana and the CREOCEAN Company are currently working on the biological restoration of the reef by replanting coral cuttings in a 4,000m2 area of degraded coral on the island.
  • These experts carry out underwater dives to collect coral cuttings from a healthy reef in Tamatave, and then replant these coral colonies in degraded sites on Plum Island through active restoration, which involves transplanting corals.
  • Since February 28, 2023, no less than 1,500 m2 of the degraded area of Plum Island have been transplanted with coral to restore the ecosystem to as close to its original condition as possible.
  • This coral transplantation activity is part of the “Restoration and Conservation of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems” project in the Eastern Region, funded by the World Bank through the Swiofish2 Project of the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy and implemented by the NGO Tany Ifandovana and its partner, the company CREOCEAN.
WHY DO WE TAKE ACTION?
  • Achieving biological restoration of reefs is very important, as coral reefs perform vital functions for marine and coastal ecosystems. Yet coral reefs face threats such as global warming, pollution, overexploitation of resources and destructive fishing practices.
